Is my antivirus software good enough?
Many people think that free antivirus will do a good enough job and they need nothing else. However, free software is free for a reason and these products usually have only basic functions and can’t protect you from some of the attacks. Professional antivirus software, for example, provides a 24/7 shield, an Internet firewall, or a scanner to check for infected files. Generally, these software products can be divided into three categories.
Classic antivirus - basic computer protection against viruses and other digital infections. It scans your computer for dangerous software. If it finds any, it can delete it or put it in quarantine.
Internet Security - protects against threats lurking on the Internet. It prevents identity theft, safeguards your online payments, filters spam and spyware, and can also protect your webcam from misuse.
Comprehensive protection - in addition to malware, it protects against online threats. A comprehensive antivirus program should include features such as a spam filter, anti-phishing, or a firewall.
How to choose an antivirus program
- Device type - there are antiviruses designed for PCs, mobile phones, or both. It's up to you to decide what protection you need.
- Number of devices - buy a license depending on where you plan to use the antivirus. If you have, for example, a smartphone, tablet, and laptop, choose a licence for 3 devices.
- Functionality - make sure the antivirus you have chosen is compatible with youroperating system.
- Licence duration - you can choose from several options, the most common being 12, 24, and 36 months.
- Type of use - for home use you will need a non-commercial licence; for work you must obtain a corporate licence.
