Uses and Benefits
The YubiKey 5C NFC is most commonly used to secure logins to web services and applications on the internet (such as email services, social networks, and cryptocurrency exchanges) in the form of a second strong factor, multi-factor authentication, or ideally passwordless authentication, where the user confirms their identity by pressing a button, with which the token is equipped. 9 out of 10 of the world’s top IT companies have implemented YubiKey tokens to authenticate their employees (Google, Facebook, Microsoft). The YubiKey 5C NFC security token has no battery and does not require drivers to function; it also does not need to be installed or updated in any way. This makes it reusable for any number of services, not just one specific one.

Authentication Principle and Supported Services
The YubiKey 5C NFC features a metal button that the user presses to confirm the operation being performed (this may not always be required). The token distinguishes between a long and a short press. The button is purely mechanical; no fingerprint is scanned. In addition to pressing the button, the user also enters a numeric PIN if necessary (similar to using a payment card at an ATM). Yubico maintains a list of hundreds of services with which YubiKey tokens can be paired. There is also a publicly maintained list of services supporting 2FA. The services relevant to YubiKey in this list are those marked as supporting hardware or software tokens.
