Three categories of investigation cards
Each case in A Detective – Claire Harper Takes the Stage has its own introduction, a set of investigation cards, and supplementary documents. The cards are divided into three categories: red cards represent suspect interviews, blue cards describe locations related to the case, and yellow cards focus on clues and items found. Players reveal the individual cards and documents gradually based on references in materials they have already obtained. Some information also needs to be connected – for example, by checking if the coloured lines on two cards match up and whether the individual clues are related.
A detective alternative to popular escape room games
Players decide together which clues to investigate and discuss possible explanations. They choose the order in which they reveal the available cards, can refer back to previously obtained information, and continuously revise their conclusions. The goal of A Detective – Claire Harper Takes the Stage is to correctly answer the questions on the introductory sheet for the case. The number of revealed cards replaces game time: the fewer cards players need to solve a question, the more points they get for a correct answer. Some cards are locked and can only be obtained after revealing a set number of certain symbols.
The sooner you answer, the more points you get
Once the players have investigated the case, they hold a final discussion and lock in their answers. They then open the solution envelope, which contains the correct answers and their explanations. For each correct answer, they receive points based on the stage of the investigation at which they definitively recorded it; they receive no points for incorrect answers. The A Detective – Claire Harper Takes the Stage game contains three cases that are narratively connected, so it is recommended to solve them in the given order.
