The QNAP TR-004U NAS expansion unit is used to increase the storage capacity of QNAP network storage and personal computers. The device functions as a direct-attached storage (DAS) external drive, connecting via a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C interface with data transfer speeds of up to 5Gb/s. The metal 1U Short Depth Rackmount chassis features four bays for 3.5″ or 2.5″ SATA hard drives. This gives users the physical space to store large amounts of data, with the option to install it in standard 19″ racks. The slots are lockable and the storage can be managed using the manager on your computer.

Hardware RAID Control
The device features a mechanical DIP switch on the back for selecting the disk mode. The system supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, JBOD, and Individual configurations. Users can switch between hardware and software control of RAID groups directly on the device itself. Settings are configured using the sliders or via the client application.
Flexible Drive Configuration
The four drive bays can be fitted with both SATA HDDs and SATA SSDs. The system supports a SATA 3Gb/s transfer speed and maintains backward compatibility with SATA 6Gb/s drives. Only one type of drive must be used within a single RAID group. Combining hard drives and SSDs in a single group is not supported.
NAS Expansion Unit and its Management
The Storage & Snapshots Manager application in the QTS operating system is used for managing and monitoring drive status. When connected to a Windows or macOS computer, the QNAP External RAID Manager utility fulfils this role. The tools display detailed information about the health of individual drives and the status of the RAID array. This gives users a constant overview of the device's operation.
Physical Drive Security
The 291mm deep metal chassis conforms to the 1U Short Depth Rackmount standard for mounting in data cabinets. The drive slots feature lockable trays, which mechanically prevent the accidental or unauthorised removal of hard drives during operation. Two keys for locking these bays are included in the package.
Using the TR-004U for Backups
The device serves to directly expand a volume or as a separate external storage for backups. The connected system automatically enters sleep mode when the USB cable is disconnected or when the host computer hibernates. Data transfer via the USB interface does not burden the local computer network. Power is supplied by a built-in 100W source.
Cross-Platform Compatibility
Broad operating system support includes Windows, macOS, Linux, and the enterprise-grade QTS and QuTS hero. The device supports various file systems, including EXT4, NTFS, FAT32, HFS+, and exFAT. This facilitates file sharing and migration between different platforms within a single office. An appropriate software licence is required for exFAT operation.
