The QNAP TL-D400S NAS expansion unit increases the storage capacity of computers, servers, and QNAP network storage devices. The device contains four 3.5" drive bays with a SATA 6Gb/s interface. A QXP PCIe card and the included SFF-8088 cable connect it to the host computer. Four independent channels transfer data at speeds of up to 24Gb/s. The lockable drive trays prevent accidental removal of media during operation. The unit requires QTS 4.4.2 or newer, or the QuTS hero system. Its performance surpasses standard external USB and eSATA JBOD solutions. The device serves in several different modes according to the user's needs. The first option is to directly expand the capacity of an existing QNAP NAS with a separate storage pool. The drives can also be operated in individual external storage mode for easy data transfer. Formatting the drives to the exFAT file system facilitates file sharing between Windows and Ubuntu platforms.

Flexible storage management
The drives in the QNAP TL-D400S NAS expansion unit are set up and monitored using software tools specific to the connected system. When connected to a QNAP NAS, the user configures volumes in the Storage & Snapshots Manager application. The tool supports the creation of storage pools and snapshots. For computers with Windows and Ubuntu systems, the QNAP JBOD Manager application is used, which displays fan status and drive health.
Compatibility
The QNAP TL-D400S NAS expansion unit works with QTS 4.4.2 and newer or with QuTS hero operating systems. In Windows and Ubuntu environments, users can create software RAID arrays. Windows users can use the Storage Spaces tool to configure RAID 0, 1, or 5 arrays. In Ubuntu, users can set up arrays via the command line using the mdadm tool. The non-server edition of Windows has a single volume capacity limit of 63TB.
Security features and data protection
The physical security of stored data is enhanced by lockable hard drive trays. Locks on the individual bays prevent unwanted or unauthorised removal of drives during operation. The user can see the fan status directly in the monitoring software. For demanding applications, third-party hardware RAID controllers can be installed in the host computer. These cards expand the security options with hardware RAID 5, 6, 10, 50, or 60. The user then manages the arrays using specialised software provided by the controller manufacturer.
