How a microphone works
A dynamic microphone is suitable for open-air performances, live broadcasts, music production, etc. It uses a magnet and a moving coil to capture sound.
A condenser microphone is primarily used for studio purposes. It has higher sensitivity and lower noise levels. It requires a separate power supply.
Frequency range
The frequency range indicates the range of frequencies that a microphone can pick up. The wider the range, the more sounds it can capture.
Low frequencies (e.g. 20–200 Hz): Bass, the deepest notes of instruments (double bass, bass drum) and male voices.
Mid frequencies (e.g. 200–3000 Hz): The body of instruments, the fundamental of the voice (where the ear is most sensitive), important for speech intelligibility.
High frequencies (e.g. 3000–14000 Hz): High notes, detail, sibilants and the ‘sparkle’ of the sound.
The air band (above 14,000 Hz): Gives recordings a sense of expensive, top-quality sound and spaciousness.
Sensitivity
Microphone sensitivity is the ratio of the output voltage to the sound pressure level. It indicates how loud a signal the microphone produces at a given sound pressure level; higher sensitivity results in a stronger voltage and is suitable for quiet studios, whilst lower sensitivity is better for noisy environments, as it amplifies ambient noise less unnecessarily.
