It sends an ordinary 5.1 Dolby Digital signal to the old AV receiver via the optical audio output. And that's even for content played from Netflix where they have the audio natively in the newer DD+
The system is nimble
The remote control allows limited control of other AV equipment. With a little luck, one DO is enough to control the TV, box, and receiver.
