I'm returning the reader, but I'll at least leave a review, maybe it will help someone with their choice.
Writing with the included pencil is perfect. It really feels like writing on paper. Granted, I was only buying it to read, but writing on it was really contagious and I used it more than I would have expected. If your primary concern is notes, go to onyx. If you're more likely to read, I'd avoid it.
Play Store app option (although quite limited display - even in high contrast mode, half the detail disappears on this type of display).
Size - for reading at home
It's ridiculously thin, an incredible piece of hardware
The software is fine, lots of settings and options. Android is pretty choppy, but I take that as a plus thanks to better battery life. It's mostly a reader interface with the play store, otherwise it has nothing of android as such.
Size - for reading on the go
Pretty big ghosting. Admittedly this is a feature of eink displays, but from the previous pocketbook I was used to a much smaller one, here it was extreme and I had to set the full refresh after 3 pages of the basic 10.
The backlighting is quite uneven. With cold colours it goes very blue, and with warm colours it barely goes yellow - I didn't mind reading in the evening with the backlight, and rather used a regular lamp.
The back is terribly slippery, without the cover the reader was impossible to hold. There is some rubber (looks like faux leather), but it has no grip at all.
Lack of physical buttons for switching pages - for me, along with the size, probably the biggest reason for the return - I probably wouldn't put it in the minuses, because that's what you buy it with, but maybe someone won't notice it in the description.
