A brilliant coffee machine – we’ve been using it for two months. If you don’t want to use a lever machine and fancy a quick, hassle-free coffee, then I can recommend this. It just annoys me that they’ve made the chilled drinks available as a ‘DLC’, which means you have to buy a carafe as well – and then you have to buy glasses on top of that, which sets you back another 2,500 CZK. Fortunately, the round one from the previous ECAM450.55 series works for this as well, so it might even work out cheaper. It’s easy to understand and maintain; after two months, it still didn’t need descaling, and after that, you just wash the carafe, the evaporation unit and the sediment tray. I like the option to create profiles and the fact that it remembers your preferences. I prefer steel grinders; the ceramic ones from Phillips are rubbish. Having two hoppers is a nice bonus; I’ve got decaf in the second one.

The carafe is marked with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 as volume markings, but that must have been the work of some daft person, given that the drinks are labelled S, M and L. I never know how much milk to add. Either I’ll have some left over and it’ll go off, or the nozzle will start spurting because I’ve run out of milk
The coffee machine has drinks on it that aren’t clear to the user – what they actually are, for example ‘coffee’ or ‘black coffee’ – and I don’t know how they differ from, say, a lungo, an Americano or an espresso.

Compared to the previous Philips automatic coffee machine, it’s like swapping a Trabant for a Mercedes. I actually spent quite a lot of time choosing a new coffee machine; in the end, I went for this one and I don’t regret a single koruna. If you’re not exactly the technical type who isn’t keen on modern touchscreen gadgets, rest assured that you’ll soon come to love this product. You don’t even need to go to the trouble of reading the instructions. Simply unpack the coffee machine, remove the cardboard security tape, plug it in and switch it on. The coffee machine will then guide you step by step on the display, telling you what to do next. It’s the same when it comes to making your own coffee. Choose what you want to make – and then just follow the instructions on the screen. You don’t need to worry about saving to profiles either. All you need to do is create those profiles (if there are several of you who will be using the coffee machine) and whenever you adjust a drink from the original settings, it will immediately ask you if you want to save the current settings straight away. Just confirm and you’re done. There isn’t much more to say about the coffee itself. Something that tasted like overcooked socks was constantly leaking from the old Philips. It didn’t matter what beans you put in there; that joke of a coffee machine turned it into a swill anyway. So I learnt to buy the cheapest stuff, because putting anything of better quality in there was like throwing pearls before swine. Here, on the other hand, I don’t skimp on coffee, because you can really tell the difference. And I’m not a barista – a coffee specialist. It’s simply a case of either liking it or not liking it. I really can’t fault this coffee machine and I can wholeheartedly recommend it – it’s definitely worth the money.
