The Noctua NH-D12L air cooler efficiently dissipates heat from processors in systems with limited internal space. Its key design feature is a reduced total height of 145 millimetres, 13 millimetres less than the manufacturer's standard 120-millimetre coolers. This compact build expands its compatibility to cases where taller coolers won't fit, such as 4U server chassis and narrower cases. Despite its smaller size, it maintains a cooling efficiency comparable to taller coolers. This performance stems from a dual-tower design, five copper heatpipes, and an NF-A12x25r fan that effectively drives air through the dense fin stack.

Dual-tower performance
The foundation of its cooling performance is a design with two separate towers of aluminium fins. This layout increases the total surface area for heat dissipation into the surrounding air. Five copper heatpipes are directly connected to the base and rapidly transfer thermal energy from the processor to both parts of the heatsink. Soldering the fins to the heatpipes creates a strong and durable bond. Unlike pressed joints, soldered joints do not loosen even after years of thermal cycling and maintain stable heat transfer.
Quiet cooler fan
Active cooling is handled by the NF-A12x25r fan, which has a 120-millimetre diameter and a round frame designed to reduce the cooler's overall height. It supports PWM control, which automatically adjusts the rotation speed according to the processor's temperature, ranging from 450 to 2000 revolutions per minute. SSO2-type hydrodynamic bearings ensure stable and quiet operation with a maximum noise level of 22.6dB(A). For users who prefer even quieter operation, the package includes a Low-Noise Adaptor, which limits the maximum speed to 1700 revolutions per minute.
Compatibility
The asymmetrically designed heatsink towers do not encroach on the space above the memory slots on motherboards with AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1700/1200 sockets. This makes the cooler 100% compatible with any RAM modules, including those with tall heatsinks or RGB lighting. Installation on the processor is made easy by the SecuFirm2 mounting system for both Intel and AMD sockets. This system is renowned for its reliability and even pressure application. The package also includes NT-H1 thermal paste for transferring heat between the processor and the cooler's base.
