Intel launches the 8th generation Intel Core processors this time with the name Coffee Lake. Basically, it is a very similar architecture to the previous successful Kaby Lake series. However, Intel has worked on various optimisations, resulting in an Intel Core i7-8700K processor that delivers real-world performance while maintaining minimal energy consumption.
The Coffee Lake architecture is once again based on a 14nm production process. Its demanding manufacturing is being handled by Intel with utterly stunning perfection, and offering the Intel Core i7-8700K processor an excellent price/performance ratio. For the first time ever, the Core i7 came with six powerful kernels. The increase of the cores is also accompanied by a higher working frequency, which moves up to the 4.7GHz limit in turbo mode.
This is a fairly sophisticated intervention into the CPU itself. Intel is using a fairly common heat conductive paste between the chip and cooler for heat transfer. Local overheating of the processor during overclocking happens in a matter of seconds. Michal Mikle can safely uncap the processor, apply a good paste and then seal everything back into its original form. The result is a noticeable drop in temperature during the maximum load.
Due to the unlocked multiplier, this processor is suitable for games with further overclocking. All you have to do is install a high-quality cooler, have enough memory and good luck with the right piece of silicon.
Access to data is greatly facilitated by a fast 12MB L3 cache that gives the kernels enough time to instantly respond to all applications. The Intel Core i7-8700K processor is guaranteed to serve as a reliable building block for gaming computers. However, performance is literally at hand, so you can even plunge into virtual reality or into demanding video encoding.
The Intel Coffee Lake platform contains quite a few changes, so Intel has decided to take a rather unusual step. Although this processor uses the well-known socket 1151, it will require a new motherboard. Specifically, a model with the Intel Z370 chipset.
